Azure API Management

Background
Burlington is a large off-price retail company, with over 1000 brick and mortar stores across the United States. Burlington Stores began in 1972 as a family run business, with one store in Burlington, New Jersey. In those early days, serving the customer was about delivering a broad selection of off-price coats and outerwear.

Challenge
By late 2023, Burlington had around 200 internal APIs across its IT infrastructure, serving different company functions and requiring consistent security measures to safeguard the organization. The security department allocated significant manpower to manage and onboard new APIs into their security framework. As Burlington embarked on its cloud migration, it sought a cloud-based solution to simplify API security tasks and introduce a self-service onboarding process, transitioning security responsibilities from contributors to auditors during API creation.

Solution
Inspiration Global spearheaded an initiative to pilot the implementation of a customized Azure API Management system across four existing APIs within Burlington. The primary goal was to establish a standardized process for onboarding new APIs, enabling Burlington to transition existing APIs to the secure self-service platform efficiently.A few of the key benefits:

  • $200,000 in operational expenditure reallocated to enhance the security organization.
  • Secure registration of APIs in Azure to enforce a consistent security policy.
  • Establishment of a documented and replicable self-service onboarding process to Azure API Management for Burlington Teams.
